Each day when we leave the apartment, we take a backpack with us.   In it is a tour book, writing materials, binoculars, two maps, sunglasses, a bottle or two of water, a casually written or printed itinerary for the day, and an umbrella if rain is anticipated.

We took a walk into a nice residential area and stopped in at the Tourist Information office.  They tipped us off on a Jazz Club located just steps from our apartment and a legendary sandwich shop, Focaccine Bondi.  We decided we would head to the jazz club that night but for now we walked down near the Mercato Centrale for some of those great sandwiches and then a picnic on the Arno River.

Well, by the time we got to the Focaccine Bondi, the sky opened up and a downpour commenced.  So, the idea of a picnic went out the window.   We sat in the sandwich shop and ate two great sandwiches.  One was an omelet with cheese on focaccia bread and the other was an eggplant sandwich.

When the rain subsided we attempted to walk through the Piazza del Duomo but it was way too crowded.  We bypassed it but hit a traffic jam when we hit the Ponte Vecchio to cross the Arno.    We wanted to take a look at an Italian B&B for a future stay in Florence and found one located in a Mansion in a perfect spot in Florence.

We then strolled over to the Pitti Palace which had a very good exhibit on dresses from fashion designers through the last 100 years.   The Bobolli Gardens offered a scenic view of Florence.

After a week in Florence we decided to head on home, enjoy the now sunny day.  We got back to the apartment, relaxed under the Tuscan sun with a bottle of red wine and played another game of Scrabble.

That night we went to a very entertaining and very good trattoria near the apartment.   We had a liter of house wine, bruschetta, a salad, a pasta dish and a meat dish all for 35 euros.   It was perfect for our last meal in Florence.

The jazz club was good.   In fact, the featured performers were a group of NYU students studying in Florence and it turn out, just by chance, that we knew a few of them.  What a small world!

Italy Video Blog: The Palio di Siena
Twice each summer, Siena, Italy is the scene of Il Palio di Siena.   It is a 10-horse race (bareback) that would not be out of the ordinary if it did not take place in the compact Piazza del Campo, the square at the center of Siena.   Thousands of onlookers pack the Piazza and cheer as the 90-second wild race takes place.  Jockeys are often thrown from their horses and the action passes dangerously close to the specators.  It is reminiscint of the crazy scene one might see at the running of the bulls in Pamplona.
