There are a few reasons I think that Parisians have become more pleasant and helpful. The first reason has nothing to do with the Parisians at all. I think Americans have made great strides in understanding Paris and the Parisians. The American visitors are a bit more sophisticated than they were years ago. They know that Parisians should be greeted before they initiate any conversation. Americans understand that Parisians are a bit more formal, they stop to “smell the roses” and appreciate every aspect of life more. Americans accept the Parisian way of life more instead of trying to bully the French into adapting to them. I think Parisians understand and appreciate this. In turn, they are kinder to their visitors.
English has also become much more prevalent in Paris. It is rare to find any Parisian who does not have at least a working knowledge of English. Because of the Internet and the French appreciation for English-speaking movies, more and more Parisians understand and speak English. The less there is a language barrier, the more understanding there is.
And finally, the French like us more because of our political situation. Let’s be frank, the Parisians did not like GWB at all. They are ecstatic that Obama is president. Many of my discussion with Parisians centered around the new president and how happy they were for Americans and themselves that he has taken office.
So the next time you go to Paris, you will find the locals to be welcoming and kind. They will appreciate the fact that you are visiting their home.
