Here is my packing list:

  • Socks (3 pair)
  • Extra pair of eyeglasses
  • Sunglasses
  • Toiletries:  toothbrush, toothpaste, hairspray, comb, razors, shaving cream, band-aids, lip balm, cotton swabs.
  • Calculator
  • Umbrella
  • 2 credit cards, 2 bank cards
  • Underwear (6 pair)
  • Moneybelt/lanyard
  • T-shirts (2)
  • Pull-over shirts (3)
  • Oxford shirt (1)
  • Chinos (1)
  • Jeans (1) I usually don't bring jeans but I had the room
  • Lipitor pills (12)
  • Binoculars
  • Camera with extra battery
  • Flip video camcorder
  • Notepad
  • Travel Scrabble
  • Power Adapter
  • 3 copies of "The Traveling Professor's Guide to Paris"
  • 20 "Traveling Professor" business cards
  • 3 plastic bags
  • Rick Steve's Rome and Rick Steve's Florence & Tuscany
  • Travel Documents (itineraries, plane info, passports, reservation info for hotels, apartment, airlines, and museums, plus notes on places to visit)
  • 2 pens
  • 2 travel locks
  • 1 small notebook
  • Headphones
  • Laptop equipped with Skype
  • Various cords, plugs and battery chargers
  • Cell phone (I won't use it in Italy, but I need to use it to call from JFK)

This time I have the opportunity to fly American Airlines business class out of JFK and back from Milan.  I redeemed in 100,000 frequent flyer miles in May of 2009 in order to reserve the seats.     I will take the AirTrain from the Long Island Rail Road Jamaica station to JFK.

I have an apartment rented in Florence with a washer/dryer.   So I will probably do laundry once while I am there.  If the apartment did not have a washer/dryer, I would have found a laundromat to drop my dirty wash off.

Keep up-to-date with my daily (hopefully) blog posts from Italy.

Re: Italy Packing List

Buon viaggi Professore! am curious as to the bag you will be wheeling through Italy. What kind is it? Who makes it ? and do you recommend a store or website to purchase a similar bag. Grazie!

Re: Italy Packing List

If you make it to Siena-I have a restaurant recommendation. In the main square-Ristorante Al Mangia-try the Cannelloni-Salvio y Burro. In Roma in the Trastevere section-Ristorante Paris- both are outstanding choices for cucina de Italia

Re: Italy Packing List

In Venice, you have to go to a cicchetti bar. We liked the non-touristy Ai Promessi Sposi (Cannaregio 4367 on Calle dell’Oca) near Campo SS Apostoli.

Italy Video Blog: The Palio di Siena
Twice each summer, Siena, Italy is the scene of Il Palio di Siena.   It is a 10-horse race (bareback) that would not be out of the ordinary if it did not take place in the compact Piazza del Campo, the square at the center of Siena.   Thousands of onlookers pack the Piazza and cheer as the 90-second wild race takes place.  Jockeys are often thrown from their horses and the action passes dangerously close to the specators.  It is reminiscint of the crazy scene one might see at the running of the bulls in Pamplona.

If you are visiting Paris for the first time, a time share rental is the perfect lodging option – time shares are more spacious than comparable hotels but similar in price. And after you've visited the City of Lights once, you just may consider purchasing a time share resale so that you can own vacation property in the world's most romantic city!

Another great lodging alternative is a by owner vacation rental
