If you are planning a romantic get-away with your significant other, Paris is the perfect place to go.   If this is the case, I would suggest a 3-star or better hotel for your trip.   Sure these types of hotels cost a bit more, but for a honeymoon or just romance, I think it is a good choice.   My favorite 3-star hotel in Paris is the Hotel Residence Foch.    The rooms are beautifully decorated and the service is absolutely outstanding.   It offers a good value.    If looking for something more centrally located, another pick of mine is the Hotel de Fleurie located in the heart of the Latin Quarter.

Using taxi cabs becomes a little bit more affordable if it is split amongst two (or more) persons also.   If I am traveling with a companion, I am more likely to take a taxi back and forth to the airport or when it is rainy outside.

If not on a romantic holiday, I still think it is a good idea to get a centrally located hotel from where you can easily get back and forth to the attractions you want to see.   I don’t suggest walking around sketchy neighborhoods at night, so make sure the hotel is easily accessible to favorite dinner spots.  But, you can probably make do with a good 2-star hotel like the Hotel du College de France or the Hotel Chopin.    A 2-star hotel offers a savings of about 30% or so over a 3-star place.    Pick a smaller boutique hotel instead of one of the larger tourist hotels that caters to groups.   It will provide you with a more intimate Parisian experience.

Visiting Paris with a partner offers the advantage of not having to wait for others in a larger group.  Take advantage and get an early start each day to visit some of the more crowded attractions.   One that comes to mind immediately are the towers at the Cathedral of Notre Dame.   Get in the queue early (about ½ hour before the towers open) to avoid a long line.

Romantic visitors are going to want to do more activities in the evening such as stroll along the ponts (bridges) that cross the Seine.   To me, they offer the best  Eiffel Tower “experience”.    A moonlit  cruise down the Seine is not to be missed either.

If traveling with a partner, go to the smaller family-owned restaurants.    For lunch and dinner get the best value by ordering the prix-fix  deal.   Good inexpensive restaurants have lunches priced at about 10-15 euros and dinners at 15-25 euros.

Italy Video Blog: The Palio di Siena
Twice each summer, Siena, Italy is the scene of Il Palio di Siena.   It is a 10-horse race (bareback) that would not be out of the ordinary if it did not take place in the compact Piazza del Campo, the square at the center of Siena.   Thousands of onlookers pack the Piazza and cheer as the 90-second wild race takes place.  Jockeys are often thrown from their horses and the action passes dangerously close to the specators.  It is reminiscint of the crazy scene one might see at the running of the bulls in Pamplona.

If you are visiting Paris for the first time, a time share rental is the perfect lodging option – time shares are more spacious than comparable hotels but similar in price.
