Machu Picchu and Peru always comes up high on "the bucket list" in terms of places to visit. I think it is because there is so much to offer on this type of trip. Peru is a land that still retains a good deal of its authenticity, not like what has sadly happened to some other places I have visited recently. It is easy to see the culture, and experience a land and see people who live a genuine lifestyle and not as an act for tourists.
The program on the Travel Channel today hightlighted Machu Picchu as a place of indescribable beauty. Whenever I take groups on tours to Peru, I do an exhaustive job on preparing them what to expect, what the itinerary will be, and what else to look out for. However, when they get to Machu Picchu, I often hear, "Professor, I never expect this, it is beautiful and moving beyone whatever I though it would be". And that is true about Machu Picchu and about Peru in general.
In thinking a little bit more about it, I think traveling to a place by Peru stimulates us not by what we see, but by our emotions that are invoked when we experience a culture or a vista that is new and exciting to us.
