I always like to plan a trip to Giverny not by tour bus, but by taking the train from the Gare St. Lazare train station.   It is only a 45 minute ride out to the Impressionist master's home and gardens in Normandy.    The ride on the fast train is as tranquil as some of his paintings.

It is unfortunate that Monet's home can be overrun by tourist busses if we arrive after 12 noon, but we are up bright and early to get there when the doors open at 9:30 a.m.  At that time the sun is hitting the pond where the water lillies are and we seem to have the place all to ourselves.   It has literally brought some of travelers to tears to see the sight where some of the greatest paintings in the world were created.   I like to describe it as being IN a Monet painting as opposed to looking at one in a museum.

In addition to the water lilly pond, the gardens at Giverny are beautiful too.   Even an amateur photographer can look like a pro with the setting here.   In a totally relaxed atmosphere we are able to tour the gardens and Monet's house, including his studio.   By the time we leave at noon, the crowds have started to pour in, but we have already made for a memorable day.

Italy Video Blog: Romantic Venice
On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice.   It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined.   Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
