I am going to spend half the day today leading our small group to some of the more important churches in Rome.  We have already been to the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica.

Our hotel is central enough so that we can walk over to St. Peter's in Chains.  Whenever visiting a holy place, dress needs to be convservative.  No short shorts, or sleeveless shirts.   Pants are permitted but short skirts are not tolerated.   St. Peter's in Chains has one of Michelangelo's most dramatic works, Moses in this church.   I am amazed how close I can get to this marvelous work of art with few crowds and be able to linger as long as I wish.    Also in this church is the relic of St. Peter's chains used while he was imprisoned.

The next church is Santa Maria Maggiore.   It is one of Rome's oldest churches.   At the altar are the relics of the manger fragments said to be from the crib of Jesus.   The architecture of this holy place is unusual in that the celing is flat, not vaulted like many other churches.    The grave of Bernini, the famous sculptor, is also here.

Our last church is San Giovanni in Laterano - on the site of the first Christian church in Rome.  It is the "home" church of the Pope.

Our train ride to Florence is fast, comfortable, and smooth.    We easily check into our hotel in Florence, relax, and enjoy a Tuscan meal at one of my favorite restaurants.   The food in Florence is much different than Rome.  Our travelers remark that the tomatoes seem fresher, the spices seem more prevalent and there are more olives, cheeses and fish on the menu.
