Although I have never lost my passport or credit cards while on vacation, I know of people who it has happened to. It can be extremely stressful and interrupt your vacation dramatically.
First of all, take the proper precautions. Make photocopies of your passport and credit cards. Even better, scan them and e-mail the digital copies to yourself. You may wish to bring one or two photocopies of your passport on your trip with you. Leave the original in the hotel safe while you are out and about. Bring a photocopy with you while on the streets of Paris. You may need it to show proof of age, or perhaps to get a VAT refund. Some hotels require that you leave a copy of your passport with them when you check in. In that case, just give them a photocopy.
When I travel to Paris, I take at least 2 major credit cards with me. I leave one safely locked up in my hotel room while I am out for the day. I protect the one accompanying me by putting it in a money belt or by wrapping the card (with my other documents such as my Museum Pass, a copy of my passport and cash) with a thick rubber band. Why? It's very difficult to get your pocket picked when these items are wrapped with a thick rubber band.
Then, if you lose your credit cards, call the banks immediately and report them as stolen. They will give you further instructions for having them replaced. Most major international banks will replace them within 24 hours.
If you lose your passport, you must report to the U.S. embassy located at the Place de la Concorde, close to the Hôtel de Crillon. The address is 4, avenue Gabriel (Métro: Concorde). The phone number is 01.43.12.22.22 . Bring with you any documents and anyone who can identify you. The website ( http://france.usembassy.gov/) also has other resources for things like attorneys, medical service, and emergency numbers.

Sorry, but the rubber band idea is a bad one. It actually makes pick-pocketting easier.
