Here are my ten most practical tips for traveling to Paris:
The Métro: When you use the Paris métro, you will ask yourself why all other subway systems can’t be this good. From any métro station you can get to any other station, rarely with no more than one transfer. When you buy tickets, buy a “carnet” of 10 at a discounted price of about 11.40 euros. Just say to the clerk at the window, “bonjour, un carnet, s’il vous plâit”. The métro closes around 12:30 a.m. during the week and about 1:30 a.m. on weekends. Watch out for pickpockets.
I recall when I rode the métro for the first time. When I arrived at my destination, the doors did not open up automatically. Luckily, a friendly Parisian showed me that on some métro trains, you need to lift up a latch on the door in order for it to open.
The Bus: It uses the same tickets as the métro. I especially like the #69 bus which passes through some of the most interesting areas of Paris. Busses use métro tickets to board. Web site for métro and bus: http://www.ratp.fr/ and here is a link to the route of the #69 bus: http://www.ratp.info/picts/plans/gif/bus_paris/69.gif
The Trains: There are two commuter rail lines in Paris. The métro is like the New York City subway in that it provides transportation within the city. The RER is like the Long Island Railroad and Metro North. It is primarily designed to bring commuters from the suburbs back and forth from Paris. From the train stations or “gares” of the “Grandes Lignes” (the French national train network) you can access the high speed TGV and other rail lines to other parts of the country and Europe.
If you take a train outside of Paris (other than the RER), validate your ticket by stamping it in the yellow machine before boarding. If you don’t, you risk being fined if confronted by an inspector.
The Neighborhoods: I very much like the Latin Quarter/St. Germain des-Prés area along Blvd. St. Germain on the left bank. It has a residential, non-touristy ambiance about it. It is very easy to get to the Notre Dame area, Louvre, Orsay and many other attractions from here. The rue de Buci marketplace has good breakfast places, supermarkets, wine shops, etc. Near the Odéon métro station is a Starbucks (yes, Starbucks) where you can run into a lot of Americans to chat with. Generally, I stay away from Champs-Élysées. You may find it worth a visit but it is too much like Times Square for me, whereas the Latin Quarter/St. Germain area is more like the East Village in New York.
The Supermarkets: Save money by buying things like bottled water, wine, snacks, and personal sundries at local supermarkets instead of from your hotel or vendors in tourist areas. Monoprix and Carrefour supermarkets are my favorites.
The Taxis: It is not customary to hail a taxi in Paris. Catch one at a taxi stand or have your hotel or restaurant call one for you. The minimum fare is 6 euros. If a taxi is called for you at a remote location, the flag is dropped when the taxi is dispatched, not when it picks you up.
The Hotels: Don’t assume your hotel has A/C, is non-smoking, has an en suite shower and toilet, has an elevator, or offers internet service. It never hurts to ask questions. Inquire if there will be renovations or construction going on inside or outside of your hotel during your stay before you book it.
The Phones: Get an international phone card before departing for Paris. Better yet, if you are bringing a laptop computer, download and use Skype to make calls.
The Airports: The RER is the most reliable method of getting back and forth to the airport. There is nothing more frustrating than getting in a 2-hour traffic jam (believe me, it happens) when your flight leaves in an hour-and-a-half. The moral of the story is to take the RER back to the airport if you absolutely, positively must be on time.
The Strikes: Every now and then, out of the blue, French workers go on strike. I have been in Paris when transport workers were on strike for a day. On another trip, college professors and students demonstrated in the streets. On a third occasion, police needed to disburse a crowd using tear gas. In any case, none of these events were enough to significantly disrupt my trip. Job actions and demonstrations are almost always peaceful and they can last for as little as a few hours or they can extend for weeks. However, for safety’s sake, I suggest that you keep your distance from protests and demonstrations should you encounter one.

Seeking a bit of timeshare relief can be very easy if you find the right people to help you. If you have tried to sell a timeshare in the past, you know that the resale market is dead and the only way to cancel a timeshare is through the right people.
