When we travel with a small group to Paris or Italy, I do a little experiment with my travelers. For instance, in Paris I have them accompany me when I walk into a pâtisserie. I will disregard the clerk's "bonjour" and simply point to an item and say "croissant" almost the same way many people would do in Dunkin' Donuts are Starbucks. I'll take my treat and walk away.
Then, I will instruct the traveler who is following me to give the clerk a cheery "bonjour" and say "une croissant, s'il vous plait" with a smile. When they get their croissant, they also give a hearty "merci" unlike me.
It is amazing to see how brusquely I am treated and how pleasantly the traveler is treated. Was the clerk being rude to me? Absolutely not. Her perception was that I was the rude one by not greeting, not saying "s'il vous plait" and "merci". When Parisians perceive they are being rudely treated, in general, their response will be the same, if they even respond at all. However, the traveler who demonstrated the correct manners was treated pleasantly.
One of the reasons I like traveling to Europe is that there is still a sense of good manners and formality.
