The best way to get to Pisa is to take the fast train from Florence's Santa Maria Novella train station.    Traveling by train in Italy is convenient, flexible, and comfortable.    It allows our group to get to Pisa when they want to, stay as long as they wish, and easily move on.

The Leaning Tower is one of the most recognizable monuments in the world.   People always think it is larger than they previously thought when they see it up front and close.    It is located at the manicured Field of Miracles and the weather today was just perfect for strolling around, sitting on the grassy field, and enjoying life in general.

The 8-minute walk back to the train station was easy and a train arrived quickly for the 20-minute ride to Lucca.    Lucca is an authentic Italian town with cobblestone streets and narrow walkways.    It is surrounded by a thick wall where joggers and cyclists use the flat top of that wall for their activities.  It is tree-lined surrounds the gardens and homes of the perimeter of the city.    The entire city is easily walkable.   The shops, medeival towers, authentic restaurants, and almost complete lack of traffic make this town so enjoyable.

The hour-long train ride back to Florence gave some of us the opportunity to relax and close our eyes.   For dinner, our group was joined by three  charming travelers from Texas.   We dined on antipasto, pasta with truffles, seafood pasta, steak, chicken and it was all seasoned with delicious Tuscan flavors.

After dinner, under the moonlit shadow of the Duomo, each traveler seemed to have a gelato in hand as they strolled into the night on this wonderful evening in Florence.

I'm enjoying following your trip to Italy! No matter how many times I see the Leaning Tower (Torre Pendente), I am never disappointed. Here's a suggestion for those who plan to visit Pisa. After taking in the Tower and nearby sights, take a short walk to the beautiful Piazza dei Cavalieri. On a street just off of the Piazza is a real find for lunch. La Sosta dei Cavalieri is an intimate and friendly restaurant. Try the delicious tagliolini al sugo di piccione (thin noodles with a pigeon sauce) or the cannelloni alla erbe di campo e pinoli (cannelloni with wild herbs and pine nuts). There's a decent selection of wines from the region. The house chianti is a good choice.
