In order to avoid the crowded busses and metro, we took a 20-minute stroll through the heart of Rome to the Colosseum. There was quite a long line but we had VIP admission and got right in. I am always amazed when I see the look on people's faces when they see this ancient icon for the first time. It is hard to believe the history that this 2,000 year-old icon has endured. It is the symbol of an empire that once was.
After an hour and a half at the ancient arena, we strolled over to the Roman Forum. Only about 10-15% of it remains. However, with some imagination one can see it was once the center of a bustling Rome. Most impressive was the Temple of the Vestal Virgins, where young women were adored as the ambassadors of a great society. We saw where Caesar's body was burned, the Temple of Saturn, and more. We walked away in awe, having finally seen so much of what we had read from history books.
After a break our group had a wonderful Italian meal at Cott'o's, a restaurant closeby to the hotel. We were treated like VIP's and feasted on antipasto, meat, fish, and vegetrarian dishes. The wine was not bad either.
We had a surprise after dinner. One of our traveler's took some of us for a moonlight tour of the spectacular fountains of Rome. It was one of those special, unanticipated nights that make a trip worthwhile.
