It takes the super-fast TGV train 45-minutes to make the 90 mile trip to Reims. The train station is close to the center of town. I enjoy the relaxed mood of the authentic restaurants in Reims.
We’ll get to the champagne in a minute. But before that, Reims is a town with much history and lots to see.
Near the train station is the Museum of the Surrender (Salle de Reddition). It was here on May 7th 1945,that the Nazis signed the document in which they surrendered to the Allies. The room here was used by General Dwight Eisenhower’s war control room. The museum is full of interesting artefacts and documents, and still has the original maps on the walls from the war.
In the center of town is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims. It is a grand cathedral and the place where nearly all of the kings and queens of France have been crowned.
Next to the cathedral is the Visitor Center. Here, travelers can make reservations for a tasting and tour at one of the many champagne houses of Reims. A short taxi ride or ambitious walk gets you quickly to your destination.
When I was last in Reims, I went to the tasting at the Pommeroy. They have several “tiers” of tastings that cost from about $12 to $22. The more expensive tastings offer better quality and more offerings of champagnes.
All of the tasting programs involve an interesting hour or so tour into the champagne cellars or “caves”. Our guide spoke English very well and not only explained the champagne making process, but the history of champagne itself.
After the tour our guide poured 6 varieties of champagne for us. I enjoyed her explanation of each one.
After our tour, we browsed through the city, sat at a café (and had some more champagne of course) and caught the quick TGV back to Paris in time for an early dinner.

| Italy Video Blog: Romantic Venice
On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice. It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined. Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
