From the beautiful and modern Madrid airport, it's about a 30 minute metro ride to the hotel, The Preciados.   The weather is more mild than I thought it would be.

Madrid is not a city of huge skyscrapers.   I like the mix of old and new in this European city.  I get the impression that this is a town where everyone likes to stroll around.

When I first get to a city, I like to walk the major spots.   It's a short walk to the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza del Sol.   After I shake off some jet-lag, my appetite is back and I am ready for some tapas.   I don't think there are too many starving people here in Spain.  Food is plentiful and inexpensive.    We sit at a tapas bar for a couple of hours sampling some of the delcious food.   People eat later in Madrid than they do in the U.S. too and it seems like they enjoy their ham.

Tune in during the week at www.travelingprofessor.com and I will give you the updates on my week-long tour to Madrid and Barcelona.

I think you are wrong about the Spanish people not being hungry.

"On a recent evening, a hip-looking young woman was sorting through a stack of crates outside a fruit and vegetable store here in the working-class neighborhood of Vallecas as it shut down for the night," says The New York Times in a story last week. "At first glance, she looked as if she might be a store employee. But no. The young woman was looking through the day's trash for her next meal."

The woman had scored about 12 or so "aging potatoes" that she deemed good enough to eat and put them on a nearby luggage cart.

"When you don't have enough money, this is what there is," she said, declining to give her name to the paper but justifying her "dumpster diving."
