Full of history and dead people, it is the burial place of nearly all the kings and queens of France, although the story is not quite that simple. During times of turmoil, all of the bodies were removed from their burial places, thrown into a pit, and covered with limestone which causes them to decay rapidly.
Using their best guest, sometime later the remains were restored. So we can only estimate who is buried where.
There are people buried here that you have read about in history books: Clovis, Marie Antoinette, and Louis XIV.
It is a 30-40 minute metro ride from the center of Paris and takes about 90 minutes to visit. Check the website for last-minute changes to visiting hours: http://saint-denis.monuments-nationaux.fr/en/

Take a warm jacket or sweater when you visit the Basilique St-Denis. It is always cold inside this huge stone building, even in summer. It is a fascinating place, especially if you're a French history buff.
