We started our small group tour of Florence, Tuscany, Chianti and Venice with 9 travelers.  Most arrived yesterday in order to be well-rested.  And well-rested they will need to be – we have a full slate of activities planned for the week.    Today our lead was Lisa, our professional tour guide.   She’s an American who has been living in Florence for about 10 years.   We started about 25 yards from our hotel as Lisa explained the history, architecture, politics, and inside story of how Florence became the great city that it was and is today.  Next on our tour was the center of Florence, the multi-colored Duomo and Baptistry where she talked about the history and great stories of the construction of this wonder  of the 15th century.

We’re happy to be a small group (as opposed to those 40-person entourages we see walking around) to get our personal tour of Florence.   There is just so much history and beauty here.   Piazza Repubblica, the sculptures and hisotry of Piazza Signoria, the Medici’s, the Palazzo Strozzi,  and did we mention the chocolate and the gelato ain’t bad either.

What’s nice about having a professional guide is not just learning the inside secrets of Florence – she knows the best places to eat too.

The value of a professional tour guide was demonstrated at the Accademia – where Michelangelo’s famous “David” is on display.   It’s one thing to see this great work of art, sculpted by a 27-year old mater.   But to hear the story behind the sculpture is what really makes this trip worthwhile.   It’s an amazing work of art that everyone should see.

A benefit of staying right in the middle of Florence is that we have a wide selection of restaurants to pick from.   We dined on bruschetta, cheeses, truffles, meats and Tuscan treats for appetizers.   Main dishes were pastas of all shapes and sizes and sauces.  The Tuscan meat dishes were full of fresh herbs like rosemary.   Do we have room for gelato?  What do you think?

Italy Video Blog: Romantic Venice
On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice.   It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined.   Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
