In my travel experience, I would say the airline loses or delays the delivery of bags on international trips about 7%-10% of the time.  In about half those cases, the luggage never shows up.   That's one reason why not to check bags on an international trip.   The other reason is how cumbersome checked luggage can be.   Imagine having to drag heavy bags up and down stairs, on and off trains, through cobblestone streets, on and off busses?  It's no fun.   Euorope does not have the same amount and the quality of elevators and escalators that we have here in the U.S.  Sidewalks are narrow too.  In other words, it's more of a hassle to carry bags in Europe than it is in the U.S.

If you know me, I am particularly wary of the pickpockets in Europe.  I think when they see people carrying heavy bags, they make a more attractive target.

So, how do you pack for a carry-on only?  I fit everything I can in a rolling suitcase that can fit in an overhead.  I also take a very small backpack that I can fit under the seat in front of me.  Shoes are the main culprit for taking up space in luggage, so I only take those I am wearing on my feet.  I also roll my close.

In the "Links" section of this website, look at the articles I have on packing.   There is also a video on the "Video" section on packing too.

Italy Video Blog: Romantic Venice
On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice.   It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined.   Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
