Sunday morning started out with a delicious breakfast on the veranda at our small boutique hotel in the dead center of Rome. Somehow, morning coffee tastes much better when on vacation in The Eternal City.
Today we start our travels by going to the Roman Colosseum. It is an impressive structure, built over 2,000 years ago. What I am amazed about is how uncrowded Italy is at this time of year despite the delightful weather. Next is it over to the Roman Forum, where one of the great civilizations of the world lies in ruins. To understand what this ancient Roman village was like, a strong imagination is needed. It must have been a glorious place, buzzing with markets, orators, and great people like Julius Caesar, Marc Anthony, Constantine, and perhaps Vestal Virgins.
The Capotoline museum on top of the hill is an impressive museum of the relics of Rome. Today there is a special exhibit of historical documents by Popes, Scientists like Galileo, political figures like Henry VIII and Lincoln in addition to the permanent collection of sculpture and painting.
We visit ancient churches and more ruins. It is a perfect introduction to the city.
Dinner tonight is at der Pallaro - a traditional Roman restaurant. We dine al fresco under the care of our Italian host, Paola. Before we know it, it's about 10:30 pm and our chatty group is ready to go back to our hotel and get some sleep for our next adventurous day in Rome.

On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice. It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined. Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
